Imagine being forced to evacuate your home urgently, as a forecast turned from bad to deadly…or as the wind changed, altering the course of a wildfire so that it moved in the direction of your home. For anyone who has had to evacuate quickly, having basic hygiene necessities supplied for them gives them one less thing to worry about.
Join Messiah Church to pack and assemble 5,000 health kits for hurricane survivors in Puerto Rico on Monday, January 15 from 5-7 pm, at Medina Entertainment Center (500 Hwy 55, Medina). These health kits – containing essentials like soap, a washcloth and a toothbrush – provide basic necessities to people who are forced to leave home because of natural disasters.

“We want our neighbors near and far to know that we care about them – and that there is hope for this world,” said Kay Schultz, Messiah Church member and packing kit co-lead.
Members of Messiah Church have been shopping and preparing for this event for months, working with local businesses to get the best deals on supplies. Members of Messiah’s Faith Groups, from 8-year-olds to 80 year-olds, have helped to open boxes, recycle extra packaging and get materials ready to be packed by volunteers on January 15.
“No matter where they go, they will have the love and the prayers of the people of Messiah,” Kay said.
All community members are welcome to drop in to this event at any time, and stay for any length of time. Tables will be set up and led by captains from Messiah, who will make sure all volunteers know exactly how to pack a kit. The World Beat Connection band will play on stage during the event, and a speaker from Minneapolis Public Schools will talk to the group about MLK Day of Service at 6 pm.
“This is a very kid-friendly event,” said Linda Seaton, Messiah Church member and packing kit co-lead. “Kids can do this with their parents, and it will be great for families to do together – and easy for individuals to find friends at the event as well.”
Working together with the community, Messiah Church will meet their goal of making 5,000 health kits – which will be distributed through the United Methodist Committee on Relief’s (UMCOR) Distribution Center in Chatham, Illinois.
All are welcome to attend this event!
